1) Peer support is often the missing piece when parents of late-diagnosed autistic teens are experiencing challenges. It shifts emotions and opens up space to learn new strategies when parents realize they are not alone and feel validated by others navigating similar experiences.

2) It takes discussion and practice to implement therapeutic approaches like emotion coaching - the workshop wins over reading an article or watching a video any day!

3) Parents are the most important resource in a teen's life and deserve to be included and supported in therapy.

Why a teen's knowledge about their brain can help them notice tiny green lizards! 🦎 💚

I just returned from a wonderful holiday with my daughter, who is in first year university. She loves her Psychology and Neuroscience courses and always has new info to share about how the brain works.

I have noticed how this increased knowledge is shaping her habits.

Now that she understands dopamine, she is intentionally spending less time scrolling. And knowing how exercise impacts hormones like cortisol and endorphins has motivated her to get out on walks and runs, even without the structure of her high school sports.

So, what does this have to do with spotting a tiny lizard?! 🦎

On our trip, she decided to minimize screen time and be in the moment. She typically left her phone behind in our room. The result? She was so present. She noticed small details I completely missed: the local cat hiding under a chair, the beauty of the flowers, and this tiny green lizard camouflaged on a plant. 🌱

She quickly borrowed my phone (since hers was back at our hotel room!) to take this photo.

It left me thinking about how knowledge really is power.

So many teens don't realize how screens shape their focus, emotions and ability to feel joy. Many parents are just trying to figure this out too.

What if parents, therapists and educators put more focus on sharing the facts and science about how mindful choices can affect their brains positively?

Whether it's your child, teen or yourself not getting enough 😴💤 ... there are some simple steps to start with to improve sleep.

Start with this:
✅ no phones for the hour before bed
✅ no phones for one hour after waking

This simple boundary:

Most of my time as a therapist is spent with mothers.

They take on so much of caregiving in our society, including the mental and emotional work needed when someone in the family is struggling with mental health.

They come to therapy to heal their own wounds and change intergenerational patterns.

It is my honor and privilege to be alongside so many incredible mothers in my work every day.

Grief and the holidays 💫

If your family is navigating grief this holiday season, OR, if you are a therapist supporting youth with grief, here is an idea for an activity that has been very popular in my office lately.

Kids, teens and even young adults love friendship bracelets. 🩷💜💚💛

There are endless possibilities for making meaningful bracelets that honor the person who has died.

Some families incorporated their loved one's name, or make matching bracelets incorporating each family member's initial, including the person who died. Kids and teens chose colors representing their father's favorite sport's team, or their mother's elegant sense of style.

While we worked together, conversations flowed and they shared deep feelings about their grief, holiday memories and plans for how they could continue to remember their loved one over the holidays and also enjoy the magic of the season.

It's just one example of how we can actively mourn and express the feelings of grief, while being creative or playful.

Sending love to anyone coping with grief this holiday season. You are not alone.

Are you feeling the stress of September? This photo is such a peaceful memory for me of those beautiful summer days, hiking in the Rockies with my teens.

When we are outside and active, all the stress and anxiety melts away.

One of the most common reasons parents reach out to me is because they are worried about their anxious teen.

When kids are anxious, parents often get anxious too. The emotional well-being of parents is of course interwoven with that of their children.

Often, when parents reach out to me, they already have therapy in place for their teen, have read books, listened to good advice, but are still struggling.

If you have an anxious teen, I want you to know I am working on more supports for you.

As a start, I have a new guide specifically for parents of anxious teens, which you can download in my bio. I will also be posting the link in my stories. So stay tuned for more to come!

Have you ever been in this situation? Many parents struggle with the instinct to protect their child from seeing someone they love in such a vulnerable state. They may want to preserve the child's memory of that person when healthier and stronger.

All of that is completely valid. What we do know is that NOT being with a family member at end of life can lead to complicated grief later. The child may feel guilt or anger, or struggle to accept that the person is really gone.

A helpful focus is to give the chance for the child to see their family member, but with support to cope with the feelings and not get overwhelmed.
💛Prepare the child by explaining what to expect, such as medical equipment in the room, or changes in their appearance due to illness.
💛Plan the visit if possible for the best time of day for the family member, such as when they are most alert and any pain is well managed.
💛Give kids a way to be supportive: have them make a card or art work, or bring a framed family photo for the bedside.
💛Create connection where possible, such as looking at treasured photos together on an iPad or playing some music the family member enjoys.
💛Keep the visit manageable - quality over quantity of time. After the visit, let your child know they can come to you with thoughts or questions.
💛Validate any sadness or worry that arises. Remind yourself that even if the visit is painful, you can be there to hold space for those feelings and it doesn't mean it was the wrong thing to do, as NOT going can also lead to painful feelings.

This process will look different for every family and every situation will require an approach that feels right for those involved.

These are some tips based on what hundreds of grieving families have taught me over the years, and based on research in the field of palliative care. 💫

As parents, we have to balance protecting kids from adult problems, with their right to know when something important is happening with their loved ones. "Clear is kind". 💕

Yet, many women hold back from being assertive with people they care about, in an effort to keep the peace or protect the other person from discomfort. It makes sense this is a common pattern, as women are given lots of reinforcement from society for putting others first, ahead of their own needs.

Yet, over time this can damage important relationships, because resentment can build.

Perhaps more importantly, suppressing needs and not speaking up can damage YOU and your physical and mental health. It can increase stress, anxiety and depression.

So how exactly to start being assertive? First, notice the default - to being passive, or passive aggressive, or just aggressive. We want to replace those communication styles with the following.

Ground yourself, as the key to assertive communication is to be calm and respectful. Let's take a typical scenario between a parent and teen. What better way to teach our kids to be assertive but to model it for them?!

1) Start with perspective taking and convey your understanding or empathy for their position. Ex: "Hey, I know at the end of the school day you are really tired and craving some time alone. It's a long day, so I get why you want to just relax in your room."

2) Communicate what you feel. "I feel frustrated and kind of lonely sometimes, when I am doing all the dinner preparation by myself."

3) Communicate what you need - your expectations or boundaries. "I would really appreciate if you took that first 15 minutes after you get in from school to be alone and re-charge a bit, but then came downstairs to help set the table and get dinner ready with me. It would mean a lot to have your company and help."

This 3 step process is something I have introduced to clients ranging from elementary school age kids to adults of every age, as it is never too late to learn new skills! I hope you can try this yourself or share the 3-step process with someone you love who could benefit.

I have a clear memory from my own childhood that comes to mind. I had friends on the street who would walk to our elementary school together. One day, they left without me, and it felt perhaps deliberate, creating some sadness.

What I remember most was my Mom's reaction when she realized I was being excluded. She was visibly irritated, then sprung into action and drove me down the road until we saw my friends. Mama Doucette pulled the big station wagon over so I could join them, with probably a stern look towards the other girls. Honestly, I love my Mom for it. We all deserve a Mama bear who stands up for us! 🐻🥰

I also remember a sinking feeling in the car feeling my mother's distress. It sent a signal of, "Oh, this must be really bad if my Mom is upset". 😔Sometimes, what kids really need when they feel hurt and excluded is some space to feel it. (My Mom, btw, did this very well on many occasions!) Here are some steps to remember:
👉Slow down and listen.
👉Say something to deeply validate the feeling, touching on the vulnerability you know is there: "You know, I can imagine that really hurts that your friends didn't include you, because you care about them so much. It might make you wonder if they really care."
👉Allow for them to express their emotions without trying to fix.
👉Remind them how they always belong with you and are loved unconditionally at home.

Do you ever wonder why it is it so challenging for kids and teens to navigate peer relationships?

Many kids and teens who come to therapy desperately want to talk about the painful dynamics in their circle of friends, or the loss of friendships, or their own behaviours with friends, which they are recognizing as being not helpful.

As parents, we may provide guidance, but when it comes from our own emotional reactions to seeing our child stressed or hurt, it may not always help them with reacting in the way that serves them best.

Assertiveness is such a key skill in all our relationships and if we start teaching it to kids at a relatively young age, it can be a significant factor in lowering stress and building healthy relationships in life.

I did this activity myself about 6 years ago during a therapist training. 💛

Tears sprung to my eyes as we all quietly reflected about the person in our lives who was our wiser, stronger other. 😢💫

My Dad was the person I thought of right away. At that time, it had only been about a year since he died. I remembered his quiet strength and calm. He listened to me intently when I was sad or worried and would put everything aside when he could see I was struggling. I can still clearly recall how when he would speak, I felt such confidence in his wisdom and it comforted me. Of course, he wasn't perfect - none of us are! But, when I really needed to feel the steadiness of an adult, he was really there for me. 💗

I think of him often as I parent my two teens through their own challenges. Do you have a wiser, stronger other who comes to mind for you? An adult who is (or was) in your life and serves as a mentor or inspiration? It may be a parent, but it may also be a grandparent, aunt or uncle, or even a favourite coach or teacher.

Try to remember how you felt around that wiser, stronger adult. Do you already show up for your kids in a similar way?

Every generation wants to build a stronger foundation for the next, so it's healthy to consider how to parent differently in some ways from how you were parented. At the same time, it's so grounding to remember what a parent or caregiver in your life did well, that you can incorporate into your own parenting journey.

Does anger from your child or teen feel like disrespect to you? You are in good company! Some reflections on why it may feel that way:
👉 Social conditioning that anger is not healthy/ is aggressive/ needs to be contained.
👉 Vulnerability (sadness, hurt, grief, embarrassment, shame, etc) usually underlies anger.
👉 What is expressed is not suppressed - we want our youth to find healthy ways of processing anger and letting those emotions out.
👉 When we as parents make space for anger and validate the FEELING we often transform the anger and get to the underlying vulnerability more quickly.
👉 You can validate the feeling and still hold limits and expectations around behavior. And, you can validate the feeling but not agree that what they are saying is 100% factual.
What does that look like?
“Hey, I get that you don’t want to do what I’m just asked and you are pretty frustrated right now. I wonder if you might be stressed by something that happened earlier …. it’s ok to feel that way. I’m here to support you. At the same time, I need you to remember to not shout at me.”
Or, “Yup, I can see why you are so angry at your friend - that was really disappointing that they let you down that way. (But you don’t have to agree with their assertion that the friend is the meanest person, or deserves revenge, etc!).
It’s tricky to validate anger, and no wonder it feels like disrespect, but the pay off for connection in the parent-child relationship and boosting emotional resilience makes it worth the effort. 💕

That can show up as defensiveness, or shutting down or avoiding when you try to talk about it. They may believe THEY are the problem, because they are not always seeing how the anxiety is an issue that affects them, but it's far from their whole identity!

The person HAS anxiety, and ANXIETY is the problem.

So, it can be helpful for people of all ages to make a shift in how we talk about it. Separate the person from the anxiety. Externalize the problem and see how it can feel lighter to talk about. Notice that you may have a greater ability to support your loved one with their anxiety. You can be creative and playful about it, which often also helps to create space for much more effective conversations. 👏

For parents reading this who may have regrets about waiting or avoiding hard conversations, please know you are not alone. And remember that your decision was no doubt based on your deep desire to protect your child from hurt. As a therapist with 25 years experience working with families, I too have avoided hard conversations, both in my life as a parent and also in my role as a therapist! We all do the best we can with the resources we have.

Most parents facing the need to share a painful truth are under tremendous pressure themselves or emotionally overwhelmed, so it's a big ask. This is why I recommend leaning on your personal supports or seeking professional support if necessary.

If only I had the secret formula to solving sibling conflict, I would be the most successful family therapist around! 😆
I frequently get questions from parents around how to intervene effectively when their children are fighting.
👉The first step is to know you are not alone and that it's a very common struggle.
👉Then, consider the different reasons this could be occurring among your kids. What do they gain from the fighting? What need are they trying to get met?
👉Are there any factors within your control that could be making it worse - like getting in the middle and taking sides?
👉Try and step back from any of those responses and try something different.

Here is one therapeutic response I often recommend. Instead of being the referee, try validating the emotional experience of each child, without taking sides or blaming one child over the other. You can validate feelings without agreeing with facts. For example, let's say your daughter starts yelling at her younger sister for wearing her favourite hoodie without permission. The younger one is in tears and both are now yelling and angry at each other. What do you do? Instead of telling the younger one to return the hoodie, or ordering the older one to stop yelling, try this. Ask the older one to come with you to another room and say something like, "Hey, I can understand why you are so upset, because you really love that sweater. You take good care of your clothes and I can see why it may worry you that your sister is wearing it, cause if could get dirty or lost if she isn't careful." Look for her reaction. Does she calm down? Does she talk to you about her feelings?
Then, you could offer some support around next steps. "Hey, I know you try your best to be patient. It's not always easy being the older sibling. I have confidence you will figure this out with her, but I am here if you want to talk it through." 💕🤗

Do you ever feel this “good cop, bad cop” dynamic with your spouse/ co-parent?

Maybe one of you tends to be more soft, the other more strict? Does one of you end up defending your child a lot while the other steps in with limits and consequences?

Sometimes this can be an issue if you become more polarized. For example, if you think your partner is being way too hard on your teen, you may step in and provide even more comfort or reassurance to try and balance it out.

This dynamic can cause tensions if parents feel undermined or worry that their child is not getting needed support around their emotions or behaviors.

Yet, being different to some degree can be a strength in your parenting. You can balance each other in a positive way and help each other see situations from different perspectives.

At the end of the day, kids need their parents to show up with both compassion and caring, but also be clear and committed with expectations, limits and boundaries.

I often come back in my parent support groups to a statement from Brene Brown regarding her parenting approach, “Soft front, strong back”. You want your kids to feel your love and also your strength. That means you can show empathy for their emotions, yet hold a boundary around behavior. When parents are aligned with this core value and stance they take, kids and teens feel secure.

Have you ever left a parent-teacher meeting wondering if the teacher had your kid mixed up with another student? 😂 It is surprising for many parents that their children can be on their best behavior all day in the classroom but then act very differently once they are home.

This can leave parents worrying that they are doing something wrong. Or, that their child is being deliberately challenging and somehow not trying hard enough at home, since they cooperate for their teacher.

When one of my kids was in kindergarten, almost every day there were tears and sometimes meltdowns as they came off the school bus. It often happened in front of a small crowd of other kids and parents on my neighbour’s lawn!

When a child who is feeling overwhelmed from the stresses of their day arrives to the safety of home, or just the safety of their parent standing at the bottom of the school bus steps, it’s like the floodgates of vulnerability open.

Imagine the relief they feel - along with all the accumulated emotions of the day - and how it can’t be held in one moment longer.

With kids returning to school over the next few weeks, remember that if your child is coming home and acting quite differently than they do at school, you just may be doing a fantastic job at creating safety for them to express their emotions. Also, remember that this is a time of transition so lots of patience and compassion should be extended to your kids and yourselves!

Whether we call them highly sensitive, or super-feelers, or spirited or intense, about 15-20% of humans have certain traits that make them more “sensitive”.
Each and every child is unique, but some common features of sensitive children include:
🌟feels things deeply
🌟doesn’t like changes
🌟reacts with more distress to the suffering or hurt of others (people or animals)
🌟needs more downtime
🌟notices subtle odors or noises
🌟perfectionist
🌟tendency to be anxious
🌟bothered by sensation of clothing, temperature changes, etc.
And we could go on!
To be honest, I adore working with sensitive kids and am proud to say I was a sensitive kid and continue to be a sensitive human! Having this trait is actually a strength, it’s just that we sensitive people need support to understand ourselves and learn how to cope with and appreciate all those big feelings.

Part of teaching our kids to be honest is modeling honesty even when it’s really hard. When we admit we made a mistake and we own our own part of a situation or conflict, we open the door for our kids to learn that this is a valuable way to communicate and connect with people you love. 👩‍❤️‍👩
If we blame others or get defensive instead, it makes sense that our kids will learn to react the same way. So, if you want your child to be honest, one strategy is to look for opportunities to apologize. Make sure you work through any shame and show up from a place of strength and self-compassion, so that your child doesn’t feel they need to dismiss the apology or reassure you. When they feel your self-compassion, you teach them to be compassionate with themselves too! 🥰
When you react to your child’s honest admission of making a mistake, listening and withholding judgement is about creating safety. That doesn’t mean that you don’t also hold them accountable or that they don’t experience any consequences. It just means you balance your response so that they feel safe and loved, and also learn how to make amends with your support.

There is a self critic present for so many of us, and perhaps that self critic is especially loud when it comes to parenting, because we are so deeply invested in our children. 💗
It's often the role in life we feel most dedicated to. Yet, none of us humans are perfect and so it is inevitable we will make mistakes or experience challenges along the way. This can become even more prevalent when you are faced as a parent with additional stressors, such as your child's struggle with their mental health.
However, I have some good news to share .... you can mess up 70% of the time and still have a secure attachment to your child! 💕
Research shows that if parents are attuned to their child's needs 30% of the time, that is good enough. The other 70% of the time, when mistakes happen or things get messy, you can work on repair.
There is evidence that the repair process itself can actually strengthen the connection in the relationship and build resilience in children. So stay tuned to learn more about how to repair in your relationship with your child - it is definitely one of the parenting super-powers! 💪 👏

Did you ever hear sorry from your parents? Did they ever approach you to mend a conflict or acknowledge they could have responded to you differently?
Typically when I ask my adult clients this question, there is a look of confusion or reflection, and the answer is "no" or "never!" For many adult children, this wasn't necessarily a problem. There was a lot of love and security, plus it was a different generation so needs and expectations were not the same. However, I work with many adults who have wounds from childhood, and if their parents had known how to repair, it could have been very healing for them and for the relationship.
This is not a critique of the previous generations - we simply have a different foundation of knowledge available now and the privilege to be able to explore this in our parenting. Anyone have a sensitive child? Another term I love from the EFFT approach is "super-feelers"! These kids may feel their own emotions very intensely, and also be hyper-aware of the emotions of others.
This may be your child if they:
🧡cry very easily and often
🧡 react strongly to a change of tone or louder voice
🧡tend to be more anxious or fearful (around separation for example)
🧡behave in explosive or disruptive ways
🧡struggle with sensory issues (ex: too hot, itchy, hate the tag on their shirt)

Research tells us that around 15-20% of humans are born with a more sensitive temperament, or experience environmental factors and early life experiences that shape the development of being a "super-feeler". During childhood and adolescence, it's more challenging to cope because the brain is still developing and they need support to learn how to regulate their intense emotions. At the same time, these humans are often incredibly caring, have deep empathy for others and go on to do amazing things in life, because of their sensitivity to the world around them. Let's nurture these sensitive kids so that they understand themselves and appreciate having the super-feeler quality! 💪🥰

Kids are not mini-adults!
There truly are some differences in how kids grieve.
Years ago, in a group session with 10-12 year olds, we were discussing how to prepare for the holidays. I was focused on memory making ideas and validating for the children that it was ok to expect that there would be sadness.
They finally said, « We know it will be different this year, we get that. We also want to have fun and keep the traditions like decorating the tree and exchanging gifts. We want to feel happy too! » That was such a learning moment for me to be open to the ability children have to remain genuinely happy and focused on having fun, even when they have been through a heartbreaking loss. 💗

It is estimated that 1 out of 14 Canadian children will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the age of 18.
That means that every school, soccer league or neighbourhood is affected.
What do we need to know so we can understand and support those families?
✨ Children go between periods of intense emotions related to grief (sadness, anger, guilt, worry, etc) and other emotions, such as happiness or excitement. They can be very much in the moment.
✨ It’s helpful to allow for this and consider that they are not in denial when they play and seem fine, but simply coping effectively by giving their mind and body a break from the intensity of grief.
✨ Also, there is an element of shock that can last for many weeks or months, in which the full reality of the loss has not been fully processed. This is also very adaptive as it protects the child from being completely overwhelmed. (This happens to adults, too.)
✨ The death of a sibling or parent is an « adverse childhood experience » which can increase risk of emotional struggles later in life. However, with the right supports from family, friends and the community, children can incorporate this life changing experience into their story and have a full and beautiful life. That is the goal - so let’s increase awareness and support for these children and their families. 🦋💫💕
